As the sky turns amber, lions are still active on the open savanna. Rothschild's giraffe — one of the world's most endangered — feed at the acacia tops. Elephant herds move toward the Nile. Leopard, buffalo and spotted hyena complete the north bank cast.
After breakfast, board the private launch for the Nile boat cruise upstream to the base of Murchison Falls. The entire volume of the Nile squeezes through a seven-metre gap in the rock before plunging forty metres — the noise, the mist, the sheer physical power of it at water level is extraordinary. Hippos crowd every bend, enormous Nile crocodiles bask on the banks, and waterbirds — pied kingfishers, African fish eagles, goliath herons — line the river throughout.
