Tarangire National Park — The Elephant Capital

Tarangire NP, TanzaniaTarangire Sopa LodgeAll meals

Drive south from Arusha into Tarangire — one of Tanzania's most underrated parks and, during the dry season, home to the highest concentration of elephants on earth. Ancient baobab trees, some over a thousand years old, punctuate the golden landscape like sculptures. The Tarangire River is the lifeblood of the ecosystem — lion prides, buffalo herds, and wildebeest congregate along its banks.

A full day in Tarangire reveals one of Africa's great wildlife experiences away from the crowds. Tree-climbing lions are occasionally found here, and the birdlife — over 500 species — is extraordinary even by African standards. Evening at your lodge overlooking the Tarangire valley.

Drive to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Ngorongoro, TanzaniaNgorongoro Crater LodgeAll meals

A morning game drive in Tarangire before driving northeast through the Great Rift Valley and up into the Ngorongoro highlands — ancient forested slopes draped in mist, Maasai bomas dotting the hillsides, and the dramatic change from lowland savannah to montane forest as the road climbs.

As you reach the crater rim and your lodge materialises from the highland mist, the sensation is unlike anything else in Africa. Six hundred metres below lies a world unto itself — a volcanic caldera 20 kilometres across, sealed and self-contained, home to around 30,000 animals. Sundowners on the rim as the crater fills with shadow and the first stars appear above the caldera wall.

Day 4

Full Day Inside Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater, TanzaniaNgorongoro Crater LodgeAll meals

Descend into the crater at first light, as mist rises from the floor far below. The track winds steeply down through highland forest — colobus monkeys in the trees above, buffalo grazing on the forest edge — until the crater floor opens before you in its entirety. The sense of scale is extraordinary: an entire world enclosed within ancient volcanic walls.

Ngorongoro Crater is the best single location in Africa to see all Big Five in one day. The critically endangered black rhinoceros — just 26 individuals remain on the crater floor — is regularly encountered here under the protection of the conservation authority. Thousands of pink flamingos line Lake Magadi. Maasai cattle herders move through the scene with ancient calm. A bush picnic lunch on the crater floor, then an afternoon following the lion prides before ascending back to the rim as the light turns golden.

Into the Serengeti — The Endless Plains

Serengeti NP, TanzaniaSerengeti Serena LodgeAll meals

Drive west through the ancient Ngorongoro highlands and descend into the Serengeti — the moment the trees thin and the plains appear, the sense of space is overwhelming. The Serengeti is the size of Ireland and supports the largest concentration of large mammals on earth. This is the theatre of the Great Migration.

1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle follow an ancient circular route across the Serengeti ecosystem in pursuit of rain and fresh grass — the greatest wildlife spectacle on the planet. Your expert guide reads the landscape and animal signs to position you for the best possible encounter. Game driving begins the moment you enter the park — there is no waiting for the wildlife here.

Serengeti — Full Migration Day

Serengeti NP, TanzaniaSerengeti Serena LodgeAll meals

A full day following the migration. Dawn game drive as the Serengeti wakes — this is the hour of the predators. Lions pad back from the night's hunt as the first light catches the plains. Cheetah climb termite mounds to scan the grassland. Leopard lie draped across acacia branches in the morning cool.

An optional hot air balloon at sunrise drifts silently above the herds — the migration from above is a perspective that changes everything, the endless columns of wildebeest stretching to every horizon ($550pp, champagne bush breakfast on landing). A full afternoon following the herds as they move across the plains. Sundowner drinks poured beside the vehicle as the Serengeti sky turns extraordinary shades of amber and gold.

Serengeti — Final Game Drives

Serengeti NP, TanzaniaSerengeti Serena LodgeAll meals

A final full day to absorb the Serengeti at your own pace. Morning at golden hour — the most beautiful light in Africa, when the plains glow amber and every animal is caught in silhouette. Your guide tracks the resident leopards through the riverine forest along seasonal watercourses.

The Serengeti's granite kopjes — ancient rocky outcrops that break through the plains — harbour their own world: rock hyrax in the crevices, dwarf mongoose darting between boulders, and martial eagles circling overhead. A morning spent exploring a kopje is one of the Serengeti's most underrated experiences. Farewell dinner under the African stars as the hyena calls carry across the darkness.
