Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Arusha, TanzaniaArusha Coffee LodgeDinner included

Your Asante Tours guide meets the whole family at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your lodge on a working coffee estate. For children, the journey itself begins here — Mount Meru above the canopy, the smell of roasting Arabica, and the first African bird calls drifting across the estate gardens.

Welcome dinner with your guide and a family-friendly safari briefing — maps, animal identification books, and junior ranger packs distributed for the days ahead. An early night is warmly recommended; Tanzania begins properly tomorrow.

Arusha — Family Orientation & Arusha National Park

Arusha, TanzaniaArusha Coffee LodgeAll meals

A gentle first full day — perfect for adjusting to Tanzania time and building excitement before the main parks. Morning game drive in Arusha National Park, compact and beautifully varied: giraffe browsing above eye level, colobus monkeys swinging through the fig trees, and flamingos on the alkaline crater lakes. For younger children, this first wildlife encounter — close, unthreatening, wonderfully varied — is the ideal introduction.

Afternoon at the Cultural Heritage Centre — one of East Africa's finest art and craft galleries, where children can watch Tingatinga artists at work and choose a souvenir painting. Maasai warriors at the adjacent craft market demonstrate traditional jewellery-making and the famous jumping dance that never fails to delight young visitors.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara, TanzaniaManyara Tree LodgeAll meals

Drive southwest into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara — a park that delivers extraordinary wildlife variety within a compact area, making it ideal for families. The alkaline lake shore turns flamingo-pink when the birds are present, and the forest edge is where Manyara's famous tree-climbing lions are most often found — lions lying draped across acacia branches at eye level, a sight that reliably produces complete silence in the vehicle before erupting into excited chatter.

Junior ranger activity sheets keep children engaged between sightings — identifying bird species, noting animal behaviour, and tallying their personal Big Five progress. The lodge is set among mahogany trees with a family pool and guided night walks for older children after dinner.

Day 4

Drive to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Ngorongoro, Tanzania& Beyond Ngorongoro Crater LodgeAll meals

A morning game drive in Manyara before driving east through the Great Rift Valley and climbing into the Ngorongoro highlands. For children, the Rift Valley is a geography lesson made real — the escarpment drops hundreds of metres to the valley floor, visible from overlooks along the road. Your guide explains the volcanic history of the caldera ahead in terms children remember.

As you reach the crater rim and the lodge comes into view, the first sight of Ngorongoro — 600 metres below, 20 kilometres across, a complete wildlife world within ancient volcanic walls — is one of those moments that children describe to their own children decades later. Sundowners on the crater rim as the caldera fills with evening mist.

Day 5

Full Day Inside Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania& Beyond Ngorongoro Crater LodgeAll meals

Descend into the crater at dawn — the family packed into the Land Cruiser with binoculars, activity sheets, and genuine anticipation. The crater floor is extraordinary: 30,000 animals in a self-contained world, nowhere to hide and nowhere to go. For children, this concentration of wildlife — where a single drive can yield lion, elephant, hippo, wildebeest and black rhino — is the safari moment they describe for the rest of their lives.

The critically endangered black rhino, just 26 individuals on the crater floor, is regularly seen under conservation protection. Lake Magadi's flamingos — thousands of them — draw gasps from even the most safari-seasoned adults. A family picnic lunch on the crater floor before an afternoon following the lion prides, then the drive back up the crater wall as the caldera fills with late light below.

Day 6

Into the Serengeti

Serengeti NP, TanzaniaSerengeti Pioneer CampAll meals

Drive west from Ngorongoro through the ancient highlands and descend into the Serengeti — the moment the forest gives way to the open plains is one of those slow revelations that builds over several kilometres. For children who have been tracking their animal list through Arusha, Manyara and Ngorongoro, the Serengeti is the final, greatest stage.

Game driving begins immediately on entry. Wildebeest herds stretch to every horizon; cheetah stalk through the golden grass; giraffe drift between fever trees. Arrive at your family-friendly camp in time for the evening campfire — your guide leads a bush storytelling session as the night sounds of the Serengeti build around you.

Serengeti — Migration & Junior Ranger Day

Serengeti NP, TanzaniaSerengeti Pioneer CampAll meals

A full day designed around the family rhythm. Dawn game drive following the wildebeest herds — the migration is not a single event but a constant, daily movement across the plains, and your guide positions the vehicle on the edge of a herd so children can experience the sound and smell of Africa's greatest spectacle at close range.

Mid-morning junior ranger programme back at camp — led by an experienced guide, children learn animal tracking, bird identification, and basic bush navigation using the sun and stars. Older children can attempt a short guided walk in the camp surrounds. Afternoon predator drive as the light softens, targeting the Serengeti's famous cheetah families and the resident lion pride that hunts near the camp.

Serengeti — Final Day & Farewell Campfire

Serengeti NP, TanzaniaSerengeti Pioneer CampAll meals

A final morning at the pace the family chooses — perhaps one more predator drive at golden hour, or a gentle kopje walk to find the rock hyrax families and dwarf mongoose that have fascinated the children all week. Your guide organises a family photography session on a scenic kopje — the Serengeti plains stretching to every horizon behind you, a photograph that captures the journey.

Afternoon at leisure — swimming, reading on the tent veranda, or simply absorbing ten days of extraordinary Tanzania. Farewell campfire dinner under the stars, where your guide presents each child with their completed junior ranger certificate and the family reviews their animal list together. The tally is always more impressive than anyone expected.
