Early morning briefing at park headquarters before entering Volcanoes National Park with your ranger guide. The trek through the volcanic forest varies in length depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight — through bamboo, nettles, wild celery and ancient Hagenia trees. Then the encounter: one full hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. The silverback's presence, the infants playing, the extraordinary calm of being among beings that share 98.3% of human DNA — it is unlike any other wildlife experience on earth. Your permit is fully included.

Afternoon: golden monkey trek in the bamboo forest — Rwanda's other endemic primate, vivid orange-gold against the green bamboo, playing acrobatically through the canopy. A remarkable bonus encounter on a day already defined by one of Africa's greatest wildlife experiences.

Black rhinoceros, lion, elephant, leopard and buffalo — all Big Five in one day is not merely possible here, it is likely. Accommodation

Nine nights across five exceptional properties in Rwanda and Tanzania — each the finest in its location, combining the intimacy of primate forest lodges with the grandeur of Tanzania's great safari camps.

Night 1 · Kigali, Rwanda

Kigali Serena Hotel

City centre · Kigali, Rwanda

★★★★★

Kigali's finest hotel — set on a hilltop with sweeping views over the city, beautifully designed rooms, outstanding cuisine, and the attentive service Rwanda has become celebrated for. The ideal introduction to one of Africa's most extraordinary countries.

Nights 2 & 3 · Volcanoes NP, Rwanda

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge

Volcanoes National Park boundary · Northwest Rwanda

★★★★★

Named after the Sabyinyo volcano rising above the lodge, this is Rwanda's most celebrated gorilla trekking base — eight spacious cottages with views across the Virunga volcanoes, roaring log fires in the evenings (the highland air turns cool after dark), and a kitchen that draws from the lodge's own gardens. A portion of every room rate directly funds community development and gorilla conservation in the surrounding area.

Night 4 · Arusha, Tanzania

Arusha Coffee Lodge

Working Arabica coffee estate · Arusha, Tanzania

★★★★★

An elegant night of transition on a working coffee estate. Plantation cottages among the coffee trees, exceptional cuisine, and the scent of Arabica in the highland air. The perfect bridge between Rwanda's intimate forest world and the vast savannah ahead.

Nights 5 & 6 · Ngorongoro, Tanzania

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Ngorongoro Crater rim at 2,286m · Tanzania

★★★★★

Africa's most theatrical lodge perched on the crater rim — banana-leaf ceilings, rose petals, dedicated butlers, and a view 600 metres down into the caldera from every suite. Named one of the world's great lodges. After Rwanda's forest intimacy, the scale of Ngorongoro below is almost incomprehensible.

Nights 7, 8 & 9 · Serengeti, Tanzania

Singita Grumeti

350,000-acre private Grumeti concession · western Serengeti

★★★★★

The Serengeti's most celebrated private concession — exclusive game drives, river-facing suites, extraordinary cuisine and a conservation programme that has transformed the western Serengeti. Three nights allows the migration to be followed at its own pace rather than rushed.
