Afternoon drive northwest through the green Rwandan highlands to Volcanoes National Park — one of the most beautiful landscapes in Africa, where the Virunga volcanoes rise through mist on the Congo border. Early morning briefing at park headquarters before entering Volcanoes National Park with your ranger guide. A morning at leisure in the highland lodge — perhaps a final walk in the forest surrounds or simply absorbing the extraordinary views of the Virunga volcanoes from your veranda. Drive back to Kigali airport for your connecting flight to Arusha, Tanzania — a short journey that crosses from the Central African highlands to the East African safari heartland.

Drive west from Arusha through the Great Rift Valley — one of the world's great geological spectacles — and climb into the Ngorongoro highlands. The road rises through forest and highland meadows, Maasai bomas visible on the hillsides, until the crater rim appears and below it — 600 metres down, 20 kilometres across — the Ngorongoro Crater reveals itself entire. Descend at dawn into the world's most biodiverse place for its size.
