As you reach the crater rim and your lodge comes into view, the sensation is unlike anything else in Africa. Below you, 600 metres down, lies a self-contained wildlife world — a volcanic caldera 20km across, home to around 30,000 animals. Sundowners on the rim as the crater fills with evening shadow.

Game driving begins immediately upon entering the park. Wildebeest herds stretch to the horizon; cheetah stalk through the golden grass; lion prides sprawl under fever trees in the afternoon heat. Arrive at your luxury camp in time for sundowners and your first Serengeti evening under the Milky Way.

An optional balloon safari at sunrise lifts you silently above the plains ($550pp) — the perspective from above, watching the migration herds from a height, is one of the great experiences in African travel.

Mid-morning bush breakfast in the field, then a full afternoon following the wildebeest herds as they move across the open plains. Sundowner drinks poured beside the vehicle as the Serengeti sun drops to the horizon — and then, dinner under a sky so full of stars it seems impossible.

Accommodation

Eight nights across four exceptional properties in Kenya and Tanzania — each chosen for its location, wildlife access and the singular atmosphere that only great African camps achieve.

Night 1 · Nairobi, Kenya

The Hemingways Nairobi

Karen, Nairobi — Africa's most awarded boutique hotel

★★★★★

A masterpiece of colonial elegance in Nairobi's leafy Karen suburb. Named after the legendary author, Hemingways blends period character with absolute luxury — fine dining, a stunning pool and rooms that feel like a private estate. The ideal introduction to East Africa.

Nights 2 & 3 · Masai Mara, Kenya

Angama Mara

Oloololo Escarpment — the Out of Africa film location, 500m above the Mara

★★★★★

Perched on the Oloololo Escarpment with 360° views across the Mara basin, Angama is one of Africa's most celebrated safari camps. Thirty luxurious tented suites, glass-fronted bathrooms, a cantilevered pool over the escarpment edge, and food so outstanding it alone justifies the journey.

Night 4 · Arusha, Tanzania

Arusha Coffee Lodge

Working Arabica coffee estate · Arusha, Tanzania

★★★★★

Set on a 500-acre working coffee estate, Arusha Coffee Lodge is a transition of quiet elegance — twelve plantation-style cottages surrounded by coffee trees, with Mount Meru visible above the canopy. A remarkable contrast to the open plains, and a perfect night's rest before the crater.

Nights 5 & 6 · Ngorongoro, Tanzania

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Crater rim at 2,286m · Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

★★★★★

An extraordinary camp that balances Maasai tribal decoration with European opulence — banana-leaf ceilings, rose petals in the bath, butlers who carry you through the crater in vintage Land Rovers. Perched on the very rim of the world's greatest wildlife arena, with crater views from every suite. One of the most theatrical settings in Africa.

Nights 7 & 8 · Serengeti, Tanzania

Singita Grumeti

Grumeti concession · western Serengeti, Tanzania

★★★★★

Singita Grumeti occupies a 350,000-acre private concession bordering the Serengeti — meaning game drives with no other vehicles, and access to areas most tourists never reach. The lodge itself is widely considered among the finest in Africa, with river-facing suites, an extraordinary wine cellar, and a conservation programme that has transformed the western Serengeti ecosystem.
